State Colleges in Florida - The Facts and Figures

There are around 300 colleges in Florida, some big and famous, others not so much. The most popular colleges in Florida are the state schools, most best known for their fierce dedication to their college football programs. But there's more than just sunshine and football going on at the top state colleges in Florida.

Florida State University - Tallahassee

FSU is in Tallahassee, the capitol city of the State of Florida. Of the four largest state schools in Florida, FSU has the lowest enrollment at just over 40,000 students in 2007.

• Tuition for Florida residents is $3,799 per semester. Non-residents pay $18,243.
• Most popular majors: business marketing and social sciences.
• SAT scores: Critical Reading 540-630, Math 550-640, Writing 510-600.
• Home of the Florida Seminoles college football team.
• Started in 1954 as the Florida Institute, a school for boys, and then became the first and only Florida state school for women, called the Florida State College for Women, until 1947 when it turned co-ed once again.

University of Central Florida - Orlando

UCF is the fastest growing state school in Florida, with enrollment of almost 50,000. It is located on the eastern side of Orlando, about 35-40 minutes away from Disney World.

• In-state tuition is $3,947. Out-of-state tuition is $18,689.
• Business marketing and education are the two most popular majors.
• SAT scores: Critical Reading 530-620, Math 540-640, Writing 510-600.

University of Florida - Gainesville

UF is the largest state school in Florida, with over 50,000 students last year. It is located in Gainesville, Florida, a small college town about an hour northwest of Orlando.

• Florida residents pay $3,790 per semester. Non-residents pay $20,640.
• SAT scores: Critical Reading 560-670, Math 580-690.
• UF is the 5th largest state university in the country.
• Home of the NCAA champion Florida Gators football and basketball teams.
• Gatorade was developed at UF and named after the Gators.

The University of Florida is not all about sports, though. Over the years, they have added state-of-the-art research facilities that make it one of the top research schools in the country. But there really is nothing like taking in a Gators game in the Swamp, which is the name of the Gator home stadium.

University of South Florida - Tampa

Located in the heart of Tampa, USF is a booming state school with enrollment of more than 40000 students.

• In-state tuition is $3,906, and out-of-state tuition is $16,623.
• SAT scores: Critical Reading 500-600, Math 510-610, Writing 470-570.
• Most popular majors: Business marketing, social sciences and education.

Florida public colleges have one of the lowest in-state tuition rates in the country. They make up the difference with out-of-state tuition costs, however. Non-Florida residents can pay up to 7 times more for tuition than their fellow students that are considered residents of the state.
